A hanging robot plays a string instrument while tracking the viewer. Using a five cell horizontal array of infrared sensors on the wall, the robot moves towards the viewer from the center, within the sensing boundary. As the robot slides, the strings' pitch changes. Two strings are stroked by servo motors at the other end of the installation so that the audio spaces compete, creating sonic tension. The closer the viewer stands, the more frequently the strings are stroked. This piece also makes clear the physical tension between the viewer and the work of art, and indeed the viewer's closeness or distance creates the piece.
